ways to survive the colder months [May. 11th, 2008|09:06 am]

our wonderful summer is ending. this was truly the most golden summer i can remember - stretching from december (never happens) to past easter (NEVER happens). usually summer is patchy until february and ends in by mid to late march.

there are definitely things i don't like about summer, although i do realise these are likely to be particular to me.

when there are actually good sunny days that aren't so thickly humid you can't breathe, you MUST be enjoying them. if you are sick, lazy, or want to do something inside - this is not good enough. TEH GUILT REIGNS. you force yourself outside. the winter days will come soon enough (and they do).

i am also a keen swimmer but not a hang out on the beach type. i like to be in the water for 2+ hours, heavy surf which completely exhausts and exhilarates. i do not like to lie on the beach getting gritty sand EVERYWHERE.

winter, though providing some good options for activities and less guilt, is hard. when it gets dark early i am sad - walking home at only 6pm but feeling a bit edgy because it's dark and deserted is not cool. no time to hang out on the deck or in the garden makes me sad.

these are some of the things i plan to do this winter so that i feel less angsty and more relaxed about winter. these are also things which mean i do not have to leave the house or spend money (apart from maybe stamps, baking supplies etc) which is good for my DIY budget.

1. have themed outfit days
i am not a fashionista. i leave it to the pros. however, this does not stop me from my own take on all kinds of different "looks" which appeal to me (and probably me only) - french mime, russian spy, famous chess player, ballet dancer... sometimes these are more over the top than other times, but trust me. even if you can hardly tell what the theme of the day is, I KNOW, and that is the most important thing.

2. have all day on the couch marathons
when the rain is pelting down - or even when auckland is doing the special brand of oppressive bright grey cloud it is so good at - hide on the couch, rugged up in your dressing gown, blankets and slippers. watch endless episodes of law and order, or whatever show du jour you are raving about. other good options are: dexter, weeds, the west wing, project runway (or america's next top model), the l word, arrested development - basically anything with a great story line and a reason to exist. works best if you have *ahem* downloads *ahem* or mysky/tivo.

3. make something
if you used to be a zinester, get the past tense out of that sentence. if you used to be [insert something here], get the past tense out of that sentence! no better time than a gross day to huddle inside, drink a load of coffee and get your fingers sticky with glue and bits of paper. this is what i plan to be doing right after i finish this. if you're not a paper and pen type - make a website. bake. PAPIER MACHE (man i haven't done that in a long time...sounds good). etc.

4. write to someone.
people don't really like email that much anymore. well, i love to see it and read it but replying? ugh. i have stacks of stationery in my drawer and the will to put pen to paper. MUCH better than email. MUCH better for the sender. take some time out and send someone a letter - if you're lucky, they will write back! i especially like aerogrammes at the moment for that 1970s feel (and even if they're not 70s, leave me alone - see #1). HA!

Ok, so those are my ideas at the moment. Not sure how optimistic I will feel in a few months when it is dragging on - but hopefully this will help.

aerogrammes were like transmissions from mars back in the day.

my best outfit at the moment is ballerina. plus i did swimming today! in the lake near here, it was awesome but i might be a little bit sunpinked now. oops.
